Craftsmanship From Tree to Table

I started out in 2005 learning how to make furniture for a local custom furniture shop located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. There I learned about proper joinery and details about wood such as seasonal movement and the dangers of disregarding or circumventing those good practices. After a number of years I started my own woodworking company on a full time basis. I made a lot of kitchens! However, I always wanted to make beautiful furniture which would bring a feeling of joy to my clients. Then everything changed in the spring of 2015. I took a portion of a cottonwood tree from the North Saskatchewan River valley. The beavers had taken it down but it was far too big for them to haul away. I hired a local miller and we cut our first live edge slab. Since then I have made countless errors and through that process learned how to properly mill and dry wood.

I have grown in my appreciation for this natural resource, its utility and its beauty, which has, in turn, informed the design process when making furniture. For example, when using large and very interesting slabs the presentation of the wood grain, imperfections included, becomes the highlight and then other elements can be simplified. Furthermore, I can tell my clients where the logs for their table originated and some of the process involved.

Once the wood is ready we can begin to build your project. Much of what we do is simply to present the natural beauty of the wood as it is. But just beneath the surface is the practical necessity of proper solid wood joinery and time tested construction methods. Adherence to these is what makes a chair or table last from generation to generation. Initial cost is higher, but over time a custom piece from IHS woodworks will prove to be a better and more enjoyable investment.
